This engraving from the War of 1812 depicted a practice
that dated back to the American Revolution, when the British first incurred the wrath of Americans
by enlisting Indians as allies. The Indians depicted were not from any
specific tribe, but the image spoke to the growing ties between the Seminoles and the
British from 1776 through the First Seminole War (1817-1818) -- ties did not endear
the Seminoles to their American neighbors.
