Osceola forbade capture or harm to white women and children, but not all of the Seminoles followed his orders. Terrible incidents took place, with Indians murdering white mothers and children in cold blood. The fire in the background could represent a burning frontier home or one of the 21 plantations that the Seminole allies ransacked and destroyed.
