Osceola's death in 1838 captured the attention of the nation. Over the next three decades he became, albeit posthumously, one of the country's best known Native Americans. He was probably the most frequently depicted Indian until the time of Geronimo and Sitting Bull. Today, more than twenty U.S. towns, state parks, and mountains bear his name.
